Minimally invasive prostate cancer treatment provides patients with new hope

The Jewish General Hospital (JGH) is using minimally invasive techniques as potent weapons against prostate cancer for some patients and the results have been extremely encouraging. Since November 2022, 80 such procedures have been performed at the JGH, with a success rate of 75%. This number represents just under 44% of all procedures for prostate cancer since November 2022.

"These options, for suitable candidates, are relatively new procedures that are not widely available at other hospitals in Canada,” says Dr. Maurice Anidjar, Chief of the Department of Urology at the JGH, who teamed up with Dr. Rafael Sanchez-Salas, an MUHC urologist. Dr. Anidjar says he waited until now to call attention to the new procedures because "I wanted to be certain that patients recovered well and remained healthy."

The procedures take about 90 minutes to two hours, with no overnight hospital stay and no need for narcotic drugs or painkillers.
