Overview
The Division of Colorectal Surgery at the Jewish General Hospital first opened in 1974 with a single fully trained colorectal surgeon and has now expanded to six colorectal surgeons. We were the first unit in Canada to practice and provide the specialty of colorectal surgery, delivering excellent quality clinical care based on the latest evidence and research. As an integral part of McGill University, we provide vital teaching to residents and medical students and have an active fellowship program.
Mission
To assure that our patients obtain the highest standard of care in the treatment of disorders affecting the colon, rectum, and anus in a centre of excellence. To assure that our fellows, residents, and students are provided training with up-to-date knowledge, guidelines, and surgical techniques.
Vocation
We are committed to ensuring that we provide the best possible care to our patients by supporting the advancement of science, prevention and management of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus, as well as improving screening, treatment and eradication of these diseases.
We will provide medical students, residents and surgeons with the most up-to-date information regarding these diseases.
We will provide our patients with a center of excellence where colorectal cancer patients are cared for and where residents learn modern surgical techniques.
Services
Our clinical activities encompass a comprehensive variety of common and specialized procedures related to our specialty. We participate in multi-disciplinary tumour boards to discuss the best available multimodality techniques for our patients with colorectal cancer. We provide our surgical expertise for the radical treatment of colorectal cancer using minimally invasive techniques.
We treat patients who suffer from chronic inflammatory bowel disease enabling them to return to productive lives and enhanced quality of life.
We provide state of the art management for our patients with fecal incontinence by offering sacral neuromodulation and serve as a referral centre for patients in the city and from other parts of the province.
Teaching
Our teaching includes both undergraduate and postgraduate education.
Research
To complement our clinical care, our division has established a successful Colorectal Surgery (CRS) Outcomes Research group that includes all the staff colorectal surgeons, and interested fellows, residents, medical students, undergraduate students, and allied health professionals in clinical research in the field of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
Our research centers on improving patient-centered outcomes for colorectal diseases through developing, testing, and implementing new treatment strategies and surgical innovations both in the elective and emergency settings. Using large, administrative, and prospectively maintained databases, we investigate post-operative and long-term outcomes following CRS, and identify predictors of poor outcomes and areas where improvement is required. We then employ prospective study designs including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies to assess innovative strategies to reduce these morbidities. providing fruitful mentorship for trainees.
We have developed a solid research lab that provides fruitful mentorship for trainees. Aside from having experienced full-time research staff (a manager, a coordinator and administrator), we have contracts with several biostatisticians, a data analyst, a medical librarian, and a graphic artist that provides her services in designing interactive patient education pamphlets.
