Consultation Service for Senior Oncology Patients

There is a growing interest in the field of Oncology and Aging at the Jewish General Hospital and at McGill University. The Consultation Service for Senior Oncology patients was created in September 2006 to address the unique needs of older persons affected by cancer and those of their families. Recognizing the interconnections between aging and cancer at physical, functional, and psychosocial levels, this service combines access to oncology care with access to resources designed to meet the needs of older adults and their families. Patients are typically referred to us by their treating physician (medical oncologists, pulmonary oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, etc.) for help in addressing issues present either before, during or after cancer treatment, such as:

  • suspected vulnerability to adverse effects of cancer treatment
  • impaired functional status
  • impaired mobility (e.g. falls)
  • cognitive impairment
  • polypharmacy
  • multiple comorbidities

Patients are assessed in the Geriatric clinic located in E-0012 by a team of professionals including an onco-geriatrician or a geriatrician and oncologist, a clinical nurse specialist in geriatrics/oncology and other members as required (physiotherapist, occupational therapist, neuropsychologist, social worker, etc.).
